MOM
The Medical Office Manager

System Requirements

The world of computer technology is extremely volatile and new hardware is appearing on the market all the time. Likewise, operating systems are constantly being altered. Please feel free to call, or have your hardware dealer call, to discuss any specific items with us.

Hardware
    CPU
A 486 or higher cpu chip. Pentium cpu chips are preferred. Windows 95 or NT systems should use a Pentium 150 or higher. Multi-user systems will also perform more satisfactorily with faster computers.

    O.S.
We support MOM running under Unix, Xenix, DOS, Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Concurrent (or Multi-user) DOS, Novell Personal Netware, and Linux operating systems. MOM can also be used on a Mac that is capable of running DOS/Windows programs.

    Monitor
Colour VGA Monitor

    Disk
Minimum 300 Megabytes hard drive. If you have a large practice or intend to use your computer for many other purposes, a larger hard drive is preferable. Currently the smallest hard drive for sale is 1 Gigabyte. The additional cost for a 2 Gigabyte drive is only +/- $20.00. We recommend the larger drive.

    RAM
Minimum 4 Megabytes of RAM, 8 is preferred. Windows 95 requires a minimum of 16 Megabytes of RAM, but 32 MB provides far superior performance.

    Modem
You must have a modem to submit claims to MSI. We recommend a USR Sportster 28.8 modem (or higher). We have all of the required manuals and can support this make. MSI also uses US Robotics modems and it is usually simpler for like modems to communicate.

Note:
For the sake of flexibility and to reduce support costs, we advise against voice or SI models. Windows 95 only and voice modems have restricted capabilities and needlessly increase configuration complexities. Data / Fax modems have proven reliable. Voice modems have been known to interfere with reliable data transfer under MSILink and should therefore be avoided.

    Tape Drive
Colorado T1000 or higher are recommended for tape drives. They have proven reliable, we have this brand and will be able to read your tapes for support, and we have the ability to support their use.
Removable platters, DAT devices, mirrored drives are also very good systems.
Backups are critical to the integrity of your system. People without tape systems do not make regular backups and are courting disaster.
Do not rely on backing up to diskettes.
Do not use an incremental backup system.

    U.P.S.
An Uninterrupted Power Supply will save the integrity of your data, software and hardware when there are power failures, spikes, or brown outs. These events occur rather frequently in Nova Scotia.

    Printer
You must have a printer. The standard for lasers and inkjets is HP (Hewlett Packard). The standard for dot matrix printers is Epson. Your printer must, at minimum, be able to emulate one of these. For the sake of flexibility and compatibility with all software, do not purchase a Windows only printer. They restrict your possibilities and capabilities.

    Voice Dictation
MOM is perfectly tractable with Voice Dictation software such as Dragon Dictate, Naturally Speaking or Via Voice. These are popular with many doctors who are using MOM to keep their charts on-line.

From MSI

You must obtain, from MSI, the following

Miscellaneous Items

For full functionality, we recommend a Word Processor that can be called with a file name. WordPerfect remains one of the most tractable of Word Processors on the market.

MOM is not an accounting system. You can purchase any stand alone accounting package recommended by your accountant or preferred by your book keeper.
